Manhole Cover Cork Trivet-Buffalo, NY

$25.00

New York State’s second city, Buffalo has a population of over 275,000 Sabre and Bills-loving fans. Those fans know disappointment and therefore share a sports-kinship with Philadelphia Phans. Located in a geographically strategic position at the head of the Niagara River and along the Canadian border and between the Great Lakes of Ontario and Erie, European settlers knew the value of the land and worked hard to diminish the native population of the Iroquois Confederacy. The Erie Canal completed in 1825 linked the Midwest to the Atlantic and created prosperity for the city, which was incorporated 7 years later. Storing and moving massive quantities of grain and steel furthered the growth of the city which is evident by the extant grain silos, former factories, and the formidable city hall. Architects Sullivan and Wright left their mark on the city, but poor foresight laid waste to the latter’s Larkin Administration building, which is now a parking lot. The St. Lawrence Seaway built in the 1950s essentially ended the reign of Buffalo on the global market stage, but the bones of Buffalo are there for a great urban reformation; if one can handle the weather…and sports teams. This cover for B.G.E. Co was found in the First Ward which is ripe for revitalization with its extant industrial buildings. Just need to bury the Skyway. Featuring an intricate polar array of linked open holes, this cover is over a century old. An added flag motif sits center adjacent to a familiarly shaped asphalt mark.

The perfect gift for housewarmings, and anniversaries each illustration is initially hand-drawn for precision and then permanently etched into cork. The trivets are .375" thick and 7.25" in diameter with rounded edges. The engraving method has incredible detail and tactility. Fabricated from sustainable Portuguese cork. Designed and packaged in Philadelphia, PA USA.
Cork is a natural material, thus rare aberrations within the etching can occur.
