Coal Cover Magnets: Brooklyn

$20.00

If Brooklyn were a city on its own it would be the third-largest in the nation. These four coal covers hail from the Brooklyn Heights which is one of the most beautiful urban neighborhoods in NYC. These anonymously designed covers were produced in the late 1800s to the early 1900s and a walk down Willow Street will reveal many of these covers. Bryan Green owned a foundry at 215 Pacific St in Cobble Hill from 1901-1927. The articulated star has been reproduced on other coal covers and has become an emblem for unrelated companies. Hugs and kisses all around for the cover with Xs and Os, replete with a cigarette butt. G.W. Stilwell used a decorative floral insert that also pops up on an Ornamental Iron Works cover. Many of these extant covers barely show the foundry name as they have been rubbed away by time. A Brooklyn lager bottle cap covers the pickpoint. Finally, Outwater & Saxton’s cover features a Girasole pattern whose center is a double entendre, in this case-a poppy seed bagel.
