Manhole Cover Coasters: Havana

from $4.00

While only 100 miles away from the United States, the capital of Cuba seems further given the fraught history between the two nations. For Americans, Havana is still the forbidden fruit of the Caribbean. Once a protectorate of the United States at the conclusion of the Spanish-American War, which ended four centuries of Spanish rule, Havana became the HQ of Fidel Castro’s revolución in 1959. Before the Spaniards, there were the Taíno and this is likely the origin of the word Habana which was the name of the local natives to the region as found in 1514 by Diego Veláquez. Now home to more than 2 million people, Havanans still have a difficult relationship with their government, but even with all of the past boycotts, embargoes, brain-drain, violence and sanctions their nationalized utilities survive. Three of these four covers represent the electrical and sewerage systems as well as one from the kilometer zero mark in the now dormant Capitol building. Hopefully, Democracy will return to the island nation and that latter design will be seen and cherished by all of the people.

Tombino replicates manhole covers from around the world into functional art in the form of coasters, trivets and magnets. Each illustration is initially hand-drawn for precision and then permanently etched into cork. These make the perfect birthday or holiday gift. Each coaster is .25" thick and 4" in diameter. The engraving method has incredible detail and tactility. Fabricated from sustainable Portuguese cork. Designed and packaged in Philadelphia, PA USA.
Cork is a natural material, thus rare aberrations within the etching can occur, but at this scale good luck noticing.
As each one is made to order please allow three business days for delivery.

“We all have three cities: the one in which we grew up, the one where we live and the one in which we wished we live."-Alan Furst

A custom display rack can be ordered too. See the individual trivets and magnets as well.
