Manhole Cover Cork Trivet-Innsbruck

$25.00

Literally translated as the bridge of the River Inn, Innsbruck is Austria’s fifth-largest city with a population of just over 130,000. The skiing is great and the city has hosted the Winter Olympics twice in ‘64 & ‘76. The city also has some super Zaha Hadid works such as the Bergisel Ski Jump and the Hungerburgbahn funicular. In case you can’t read the oversized type, the cover was cast by Josef Oberhammer. The business is amazingly still in existence now as Oberhammer Maschinenfabrik GmbH. Two Star of Davids separates the foundry name from the city. These stars could be merely decorative or an oblique reference to the only two “tolerated” Jewish families remaining in Maria Theresa’s “Jew-free” city in 1748. Like much of Austria, there’s a rough history between the two cultures, with the former very much on the losing end. Presently, there are under 100 Jewish denizens of Innsbruck…did we mention that the skiing is good? This coaster is also found in the Austria manhole coaster set.

The perfect gift for housewarmings, and anniversaries each illustration is initially hand-drawn for precision and then permanently etched into cork. The trivets are .375" thick and 7.25" in diameter with rounded edges. The engraving method has incredible detail and tactility. Fabricated from sustainable Portuguese cork. Designed and packaged in Philadelphia, PA USA.
Cork is a natural material, thus rare aberrations within the etching can occur.
As each one is made to order please allow three business days for delivery.
