The city on the Nervión river, Bilbao, was founded in 1300, but has a history stretching thousands of years. Located just a few kilometers south of the Bay of Biscay and all of the cod the Atlantic Ocean can provide, the Basque municipality is the historic workhorse of the region. Its industrial sector, particularly in Iron was the main generator of the economy. That has changed due to the eponymous “effect” of Gehry’s Guggenheim built in 1997. Hence tourism and the banking sector are now the main motivators of the economy. The ironcover here has a central coat of arms or Laurak Bat of the Basque country which consists of the four sister provinces. Reading clockwise the Álava, Biscay, Navarre & Gipuzkoa quarters are represented, and all sit within a bed of Oak leaves representing the Gernikako Arbola, where political matters were discussed and resolved in the days of yore. A contemporary typeface with the words for Basque Government surrounds the whole and a Be Beer bottle cap sits within that field. The cover was found just a few blocks away from Calatrava’s Zubizuri footbridge.
