Given its city rights in 1233, Arhem is most famous for the 1944 tragedy of Operation Market Garden where British and Polish troops were left to defend the bridge against superior German forces. The Sisyphean effort was dramatized in the aptly named movie A Bridge Too Far. That bridge, which spans the Nederrijn and now in its third incarnation, is named for John Frost, a commander and airborne officer. Most likely the paratroopers originally landed in the adjacent Veluwe national park which has a rich landscape reflective of the Dutch countryside along with museums such as the Kröller-Müller Museum, Aldo Van Eyck’s pavilion and modern sculptures everywhere.
