Manhole Cover Cork Trivet-Albany, NY

$25.00

Incorporated in 1686, Albany, NY is a city formerly on Mohican land located at the mid-point of the Hudson River just south of the Mohawk River and home to 100,000 people. This cover has the state capital’s seal in its center. The seal pays homage to its Dutch trading post beginning with a beaver gnawing on some wood. Two sheaves of wheat are below which is a nod to the state’s agricultural roots. This is furthered by the European man with a sickle on the left. A native Mohican replete with mocassins and a bow stands to the right. Those mocassins stand on a ribbon with the word “Assiduity” meaning to act with attention to detail. A sloop facing west references the importance of the Hudson and trade. All of this is surrounded by the city name and its use in a rather pragmatic typeface. Horseshoe-like arcs form the outside with two pick points at the east and west quadrants. A familiarly shaped gum splat spoils the “assiduity.”

The perfect gift for housewarmings, and anniversaries each illustration is initially hand-drawn for precision and then permanently etched into cork. The trivets are .375" thick and 7.25" in diameter with rounded edges. The engraving method has incredible detail and tactility. Fabricated from sustainable Portuguese cork. Designed and packaged in Philadelphia, PA USA.
Cork is a natural material, thus rare aberrations within the etching can occur.
